Again, legislation has been put before Congress to change our status from clerical to first responder. </p><p>Why should we (as a group) care? </p><p>Our jobs are important. So, I challenge you to follow my lead. Pick 20 your favorite first run albums and 20 "best-of" compilations. It is not easy, and I had to pick and choose which ones to include. There were too many left off. Below are my choices.
First, the list of albums. It is a mix of rock and new age.<div><br /><div> Blackmore’s Night: Fires at Midnight Ritchie Blackmore was formerly with Deep Purple) </div><div> Boston: Boston </div><div> Bruce Hornsby and the Range: The Way it Is (just love the piano) </div><div> BrunuVille: Fantastic Journey (I dare you not to tap your toes to Dance With Dragons) </div><div> Eagles: Hotel California (classic all the way) </div><div> Enya: Watermark (Enya started me on new age - the first and still amazing) </div><div> Foreigner: Feels Like the First Time </div><div> Alice Cooper: From the Inside (the album was crazy, and the songs dug deep) </div><div> Fleetwood Mac: Rumours (just WOW) </div><div> The Go-Gos: Beauty and the Beat (fun music from a great group - not just a girl
s rock band) </div><div> Jimmy Buffett: Off to See the Lizard (my fav JB album and his best in my opinion) </div><div> Lesiem (wonderful instrumentals - powerful!) </div><div> Metallica: Metallica (San Jose Sharks favorite and they are hockey fans)
Pink Floyd: The Wall (epic - movie just as good) </div><div> Styx: The Grand Illusion (I love "Castle Walls") </div><div> Loreena McKennitt: An Ancient Muse (Loreena has a way with music - she even performed for Queen Elizabeth). </div><div> Police: Synchronicity (it became a greatest hits) </div><div> REO Speedwagon: Hi Fidelity (great work - again, this could be a greatest hit choice) </div><div> Electric Light Orchestra: Out of the Blue (ELO had a way with the electronic music - hard to pick a fav song on this one) </div><div>Wicked Tinkers: Banger for Breakfast (Bagpipes!! BTW, Wallop the Cat is just the kitty's name) </div><div><br /></div><div>Hits Albums: </div><div><br /></div><div> The Babys: Anthology </div><div> The Beach Boys: Made in the USA (surf's up for a CA girl) </div><div> The Beatles: Number 1’s (hard choice to pick a Beatles album) </div><div> Heart: The Essential Heart </div><div> B-52’s: Time Capsule (alternative rock at its best) </div><div> The Bangles: Greatest Hits (who didn't want to "Walk Like an Egyptian"?) </div><div> The Cars: Greatest Hits (again, try to pick one album...the Cars are legendary) </div><div> Eurythmics: Greatest Hits (Sing it, girl!)</div><div> Billy Joel: Greatest Hits Vol 1-2 (Which of his multiple greatest hits to select. Tough choice) </div><div> Journey: Greatest Hits (Bay Area music at its best) </div><div> Kansas: The Best of Kansas (classic rock) </div><div> Loverboy: Loverboy Classics (gritty songs) </div><div> Steve Miller: Greatest Hits 1974-1978 (smooth and essential rock) </div><div> Marvin Gaye: Marvin Gaye’s Greatest Hits (for getting down, who else?) </div><div> Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: greatest Hits (long live a legend) </div><div> The Pretenders: The Singles (alternative rock) </div><div> Queen: Greatest Hits (Freddie was the Champion!) </div><div> Jethro Tull: The Very Best of Jethro Tull (flute in a rock band never sounded so good) </div><div> Van Halen: The Best of (the music throughout the career - hard to pick just one song) </div><div> Paul McCartney & Wings: Wings Greatest (Mull of Kintyre is my favorite the rest are epic)</div></div>dianasprainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16016401635807131003noreply@blogger.com0Reno, NV, USA39.529919 -119.814269112.02164150457908 -154.9705191 67.03819649542092 -84.6580191tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4371530819995007481.post-41444154232026505322023-08-10T14:53:00.004-07:002023-11-10T06:44:05.782-08:00How to make Thoroughbred Racehorses Better<p> </p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">It is no secret I love horses, and Thoroughbred racing. I
read magazines and watch racing shows. I have a nice collection of reference
books about the sport. Over the years I have come to the same conclusion many
breeding experts have: the Thoroughbred has peaked in its speed, endurance /soundness,
and longevity in the sport. <o:p></o:p></p><span></span><a href="https://greycliffschronicles.blogspot.com/2023/08/how-to-make-thoroughbred-racehorses.html#more">Read more »</a>dianasprainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16016401635807131003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4371530819995007481.post-46091312553178939772022-08-18T13:58:00.003-07:002023-08-11T08:37:49.332-07:00Model horses: Hartland and Breyers<p> </p><p class="MsoNoSpacing"><o:p>You are spending a day attending garage sales or browsing through antique stores and you come across a model horse. I have been working a major project at work so I have been 'saving' my wrists and holding off with the extra curricular activities. I do have some posts in the works. An interesting email came in from Google. It seems Google will be pulling support from non-commercial accounts. Here is a part of the announcement:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"In December 2018, we <a href="https://blog.google/technology/safety-security/expediting-changes-google-plus" rel="nofollow" style="color: #196ad4; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">announced</a> our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers' expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content. On April 2nd,you Google+ account and any Google+ pages you created will also be shut down and we will begin deleting content from consumer Google+ accounts. Photos and videos from Google+ in your Album Archive and your Google+ pages will also be deleted. You can download and save your content, just make sure to do so before April. Note that photos and videos backed up in Google Photos will not be deleted."</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, how will this effect my blog? I don't know yet. Stay turned for further.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Stay safe out there.</span><br />

<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; margin: 0px;">The Christmas season is upon us and neighborhoods are full of
houses with bright lights. Families have trees full of ornaments. Cities and
counties decorate streets with ribbons, bows, lights, and huge Christmas trees.
Children anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Party goers
hang mistletoe, giggling with the thought of the “mandatory” kisses bestowed
under the greenery.</span></div>

Books are published with the Christmas season in mind.<br>
<br>
It makes sense. Books make wonderful Christmas gifts and I love holding a book. There is nothing like the smell of anew book or the feel of turning a page and that is something a digital book can never duplicate.<br>

<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; margin: 0px;">This period has been referred to
as the “Dark Ages” as well as the Middle Ages. The ‘center’ of the world was
considered to be Rome (remember, all roads led to Rome). Emperor Constantine
had been the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity when it spread but
the “pagan” worship of Gods didn’t stop completely. The Church had to adapt
local deities and traditions to encourage the populace to join even though the
Romans banned the worship of paganism. In Egypt, the Temple of Serapis was
destroyed during as part of a series of civil disturbances against Christians. Alas,
the Roman Empire had been on a long downfall and finally crashed and burned in
A.D. 476 when the Vandals took control of the territories. As Roman society
fell apart, other peoples took advantage of the discourse: Ostrogoths,
Visogoths, Burgundians, Franks, Saxons, and the aforementioned Saxons. By 493
AD, Italy was under the rule of Theodoric, an Ostrogoth. Clovis is names King
of the Franks in 481 – Clovis drives the Visigoths from Gaul in 507.</span></div>

One of the best off-season acquisitions was landed by the San Jose Sharks when they picked up Erik Karlsson. Eric, a two-time winning Norris Trophy winner, along with Norris winner Brent Burns, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic & Justin Braun, are probably the best four defensemen in the entire league and now the four are on the same team. <br>

Those of us who attended are now back home and back to our regular routines. How was this year's event in Las Vegas? I've been to three Conventions (2009 in, funny enough- Las Vegas and back when it was held in Sparks at the Golden Nugget in the 1990's). Showing my APCO Attendee badge allowed me to park for free.<br>

One of the highlight's of the Block Party was playing Blackjack: winner moved earned a space nearest the fan. It was more for the fun of hanging out and enjoying one another's company. Thanks for a great time!<br />

<br />
Imagine Listening was put n my Ricardo Martinez II, the man behind the IAM911 movement. He has a podcast focusing on Public Safety Telecommunicators that is a must hear for anyone wanting to know what our job is truly about. Some of the stories are heart-breaking, some funny, and some just make your cringe. Today he played some audio and then invited the audience to share stories.<br />
<br />
Many of us left the session with wet eyes. It was very emotional.<br />
<br />
So what did I go to next? The Las Vegas Fire Communications Center panel discussion. WOW! They started out by playing a montage of 911 calls accompanied by video footage. The room was dead quiet as a packed Ballroom of Dispatchers watched and listened. Then the Dispatchers stood up one-by-one and shared their take on the night's event and how they have coped since then. Each one received a raucous round of applause and a standing ovation at the end. To hear about what they handled in that short amount of time was crazy.<br />
<br />
I left the conference after that to meet with my son and daughter-in-law. We spent a nice afternoon at the Lion Habitat Ranch. Then we went out to lunch. Denise wanted to check out Zak Bagan's Haunted Museum. We went ahead and took the tour. I have to admit, there were a few parts of that tour that truly creeped me out.<br />
<br />
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are full days. The vendor area open up and I have a request to bring back swag.<br />
<br />
For any of you at APCO reading this, I have signed copies of the Dispatching History book with me. Find me and say hello. Maybe you'll walk away with a free book!<br />

Wanting to avoid the traffic, I left at o'dark thirty from Reno. It didn't matter. I still hit traffic. Once the sun rose, and I left Washoe County, the traffic thinned out.<br />
<br />
Darn, the smoke from the multiple fires was bad. It made for a gorgeous sunrise but it didn't clear until I passed Tonopah. I put in a CD to practice my private karaoke skills. after a while, I flipped on the Sirius Music classic rock. The view was nice: lots of mustangs and later, some burros, and some amazing scenery. Thankfully, I didn't see any suicidal critters on the road.<br />
<br />
No accidents and minor constructions kept me going steady. I made a few pit stops to top-off the tank in Yerington, Tonopah, and Death Valley (I wandered around the famous candy store but left empty handed). I finally broke down in Beatty and turned on the air-conditioning for a bit when I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow is check-in day but I mostly have it to myself. I will be taking pictures and posting them daily.<br />

<br>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">It’s less than a week to APCO. I’ve two more shifts left
to work and I can’t wait to get out of town. The smart person would fly to Las
Vegas from Reno but not me. Nope. I’m driving. So, you ask, why would I cram
myself into a car for seven to eight hours in the summer heat instead of a short 1.3 hour flight?</span></div>
<br>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<br></div>
<br>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Why indeed…well, I’ll tell you.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px;">

July is the hottest month of the year in Reno so we like to think of any way we can to cool off. Naturally, getting wet takes off the heat which makes me think of swimming and nautical related items.<br />
<br />
The jewel in our collection is a mannikin completely tricked out in vintage dive gear including gear similar to that used by Jacques Cousteau. This is a package deal which includes the mannikin, the dive gear and a Shark Dart. In the early days of the NASA Space program, when the capsules splashed down, the Navy Divers would help evacuate the Astronauts. To keep away any curious sharks, the divers carried a weapon called the Shark Dart. The tip had an explosive charge which went off on contact. You can see the divers holding the SD in photos and old films. This device is banned in several countries. We also have vintage dive fins and a mask.<br />
<br />
For those who enjoy the sights of the coast, we have a large selection of lighthouses. Some of the figures are brand name figures and others are generic, but still nice pieces. For example: we have a Cheryl Spencer Collins lighthouse and several Spoontiques. We also have a set of four mini Harbor Lights lighthouses.<br />
<br />
Do you like ships? How about a beautiful glass paperweight in the form of a ship? We have nautical weather gauges. And for you swashbucklers, a pirate shot glass. Oh, let's not forget a couple of different Pirates of the Caribbean action figures.<br />
<br />
So, next time you are in Reno, come check out our offerings.<br />
<br />
Our both is: Sd Curiosities<br />
We're at Sierra Antiques and Treasures (a mall without walls)<br />

<br />
Until next time,<br />

Are you looking for something more out of your career as a Public Safety Dispatcher / Telecommunicator? At some point in our jobs, many of us reached the same plateau. We wanted more but weren't sure<i> what</i> we wanted or how to get it.<br>
<br>
Volunteering is a great way to connect to ours of a like mind. No doubt you're either helped out in other areas before or know of someone who has. For example, maybe a family member or friend is involved with Special Olympics, the local animal shelter, or the Red Cross but that's not right quite for you.<br>

August 5-8 is the 84th annual International Conference. There is only four days left to purchase tickets.<br />
<br />
Go to the official conference link for more information:<br />
<br />
https://www.apco2018.org/<br />
<br />
<br />
I'll be there and pending a wi-fi connection will try to post daily updates and (hopefully) some pictures.<br />
<br />
Wild & Crazy Dispatchers roaming Vegas? Uh-oh. The meows will be off the charts! Let's hope I don't end up on LIVE PD when enroute to LV from Reno (lol). I'll remember to at least smile for those cameras.<br />
<br />
Anyone want a signed copy of my dispatcher book, like my blog and post a comment IF you are attending ? I'm bringing some with me to the conference.<br />
<br />
Until August,<br />

He was respectful when asking if I was a registered voter. I said yes and asked what he was seeking signatures for and listened to his pitch. I gave him a chance to give his speech. After he was done, he held out his clipboard as if he expected I would fall in line and enter my John Hancock.<br>
<br>
Not so fast Mr. Wizard. I had questions.<br>

We now have LOTS of cabinets which allow for more goodies. If you are in Reno (NV), make a point of coming to the store and seeing what treasures lie within. The address is 151 N. Sierra Street, Reno, NV 89501. The store is Antiques and Treasures and is "a mall without walls".<br>

<br />
You may have noticed my Twitter and Facebook account are no longer active. My time constraints are such, and the concern for the security of said media are such, that I have made the decision to de-activate both services. I didn't make the decision lightly. I realize many folks make extensive use of social media and I respect their choice to do so. In light of the recent testimony of Zuckerman and the announcement by Twitter of the hacking of passwords, I don't feel confident of those mediums to keep my information secure.<br />
<br />
Will I miss the passing of information from my family?<br />
<br />
Absolutely!<br />
<br />
Perhaps in the future I will re-examine my standing but until then, feel free to contact me via the feature on my page here. For family, I welcome emails with photo attachments and will send you the same if you provide me with your email addresses.<br />
<br />
I will increase posts as time permits. We are getting into our 'busy' time at work and I have commitments for overtime and extra training this month. I hope to step up my posts with Greycliff Chronicles stories and updates on the next book soon.<br />
<br />
To end this, I am disheartened and saddened on the loss of the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the play-offs. To say the Sharks didn't play to their ability against the Vegas Golden Knights is an understatement, to say the least. On the other hand, kudos to Vegas for stepping up and having an amazing first season. I wish I'd thought ahead and placed a bet at the beginning of the season on the team. The way they are playing, who knows: they could go all the way.<br />
<br />
I'd like to see he Knights play the Capitols in the Cup Finals. What a fun match.<br />
<br />
With my team gone, I've a little extra time now. I'm re-reading S.M. Stirling's "Conquistador" and Patrick Rothfuss' "The Name of the Wind" while I'm counting down to the start of the final Game of Thrones season.<br />
<br />
Who will win the Iron Throne?<br />
<br />
What are your thoughts?<br />
<br />
Until next time.<br />
<br />
