In an effort to become healthier, and to not mope around the house, I started walking at various local parks around Washoe County. With the help of the WC Parks guide, maps, and my own knowledge, I've found quite a few places where a person by themself can safely stroll. It's not enough to just wander, I like to bird watch and carry my binoculars and a camera with me. I will be posting about specific places in the blog. Today is a trip to the wilderness area off I80 near Patrick.
I'm so glad I do this, for I've captured some wonderful snapshots of our local outdoor spaces. Recently, I joined the Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance. They used to be called the Lahontan Bird Society. On Friday, March 20th, I joined a group of fellow bird lovers for a hike. In town has many wonderful walking places, but rural areas require some caution. Walking with a group is recommended - especially when going to a new area.
We met in a gravel parking lot, from I-80, exit 28. depending on traffic, it takes about 15 minutes from Sparks to arrive at the McCarran Ranch Preserve. The walking trail starts at the Truckee River, and rambles though the Preserve.
The trail itself is natural with variations in incline. depending on weather, and time of year, there may be snow, ice, or water on the lower sections. There are NO facilities, so bring your own water. Pack out what you pack in!
There is limited shade from trees, so wear protection. As with any natural trail, keep any eye out for wildlife. We saw a nice variety of birds, some lizards, and wild horses.
There were deer tracks, but none seen. The area is habitat for other species, such as snakes, small mammals, coyotes, bobcat, and lions. A rare bighorn sheep sighting is not unheard of! Be aware and always look before placing a hand on a surface or sitting down. If you have allergies, bring your epi and keep a charged cell phone in case of emergencies.
The birds we saw today included red-tailed hawks, blackbirds, kestrels, songbirds, Canadian geese, mallards, wood ducks, and swallows.
The views are amazing. Once you walk away from the industrial warehouse next to the parking lot, it is quiet except for thrumming of insects and birdsong.
