A little piece of coolness in Reno: Mayberry Park

A place that seems out of the City is Mayberry Park. This beautiful escape is minutes from downtown Reno. Washoe County describes Mayberry as:

“This river park is a beautiful day-use facility with various individual picnic sites, a group picnic area (non-reservable), a paved bike path, hiking trails and Truckee River fishing access. Bird watching, hiking, bike riding, river tubing and picnicking are popular activities. Handicap-accessible, this park is located just four miles west of Reno, at the end of Woodland Avenue.”

The parking lot is nice, and you have options for paved hiking or “natural (unpaved) hiking. Picnic tables and some grassy sections are great for relaxing. Unlike other parks, I didn't notice a lot of goose crap (yes, it is an issue) on the lawn. I have included a map for reference.

As with any wilderness area, be cautious of the native species you might encounter (wildlife includes snakes, birds, mammals) and tail hazards (uneven ground and possible high-water levels. Bring water and sunscreen, and if taking the more remote section, keep a charged cell phone on hand.

Truckee River access is easy for fishing (license required), tubing) and rafting. While I was there, two gentlemen launched an inflatable to go fishing and the Reno Fire Swift Water Rescue was doing training. There were plenty of folks walking, biking, and enjoying the nice day with their kids and dogs.

Walk far enough, and you will reach other parks (Dorokstar, Chrissy Caughlin) as this area is connected via the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway and trails. There is a cute artsy display near one of the bridges. One was very iffy! Just remember which way you came from as it Is easy to get disorientated at the many junctions.

In all, a very nice regional park. Lot’s of birds flying around with nice tree cover for shade
